In the south of Iceland, near Vík í Mýrdal, lies the most famous and at the same time the most dangerous beach in Iceland: Reynisfjara, also known as the Black Sand Beach.
Reynisfjara is directly exposed to the open Atlantic Ocean, with no landmasses to break the waves. The waves have thousands of kilometers to build up.
This leads to the phenomenon known as sneaker waves, sudden waves that can pull unsuspecting people into the sea.
Once dragged into the water, rescue is almost impossible. The strong current prevents victims from making it back to shore, and the freezing water temperature leads to rapid hypothermia.
There have already been several fatalities and rescue operations at Reynisfjara. Due to its danger, discussions have taken place about closing the beach entirely.
This video captures stormy moments at Reynisfjara. The footage was taken on the evening of February 28 and the morning of March ,1 2025. On both days the beach was closed.
The scenes were recorded using the Nikon Z8 and the Nikon Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8.
