On June 25, 2022 the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad pulled their Nantahala Gorge excursion with Former U.S. Transportation Corps 2-8-0 number 1702, now owned by the GSMR and crowned “Queen of the Smokies”. She would pull her 17 car train with the help of GP30 2467.
For their 80th celebration, 1702 was given new golden lettering on her cab and tender, as well as a double beam headlight. Along with her Southern 3 Chime whistle, marking the return of a Southern Railway steam representer in North Carolina on the former Southern Murphy Branch.
