Sam Carter Shamai discussed his research on Black cooperative land stewardship in Virginia, highlighting the success of the Gloucester Land Building and Loan Association in helping 95% of Black families own land by 1916.
Darryl Cuba spoke about post-emancipation marronage in Texas, emphasizing the resilience and self-determination of Black communities in establishing freedom colonies.
Both speakers underscored the ongoing significance and historical continuity of collective land ownership and mutual aid.
