"It's just my attention span. I mean, two minutes for a pop song is enough," asserts singer Chris. And once you've heard Boutique's small but perfectly formed pop, their bursts of unhinged keyboards and unrequited love, their snatches of low-rent life on "What Are You Like, Mate?" and "Shame On Jane", anything else does seem a little long-winded. Be prepared: there will be talk of classic English synth duos, of classic English miserablism and, whisper this now, of the classic English Eighties. Rest assured, though, this is a good thing, because right now Boutique don't seem to fit in anywhere. "I can't remember any band that's been central to any kind of scene ever lasting longer than the scene has," reasons drummer Gary. For anyone still weary of their inchoate charms, their resolute down-to-earthisms, let's ask Chris about inspiration. "We've got the most expensive sampler, the most expensive guitar amp. We're recording in a chateau in France." But? "But we're still on the dole." How very English.
