"Espiazione" by MattewGame | Geometry Dash 2.2

There was quite a bit of controversy around MattewGame a few months ago, when "Tears of Denial" got demoted from Mythic to Legendary due to some assets being recreated without any acknowledgement or credit to the original work. Understandably, that was quite disappointing for MattewGame who has been trying to get a Mythic level for a while, only to lose it like that. This new level, "Espiazione", is clearly a vent level as a reaction to that.

I can't remember seeing anything quite like this in the game before, but it turned out great in my opinion. Playing it, I could get a feeling for MattewGame's emotions. At times, it got quite disturbing, thanks to great mixing of art and audio. The music choices are one thing, but we also have to mention the voicelines, which are actually recorded by MattewGame himself for the level. These add a lot to the various cutscenes with characters talking. I also appreciate that the level acknowledges that the demotion was his own mistake. From what I can tell, this one is a lot more original with some references to his past works, but let me know if I missed something.

The gameplay of this is also very enjoyable, with some parts having interesting twists that I couldn't have expected. For example, the first boss needs you to take damage, while 8:46 requires you to just not do anything, as opposed to what the symbols may tell you. Each of the bosses are also very unique in their attack patterns. This is definitely a level to play in-game if you get the chance. I've been slacking on Platformer showcases, but I figured I'd get around to doing this one at least. Due to the length, it will likely be 8 Moons. However, it's not too difficult with good checkpoints throughout. The level was a bit too explicit with some messages before, but I believe MattewGame has improved that now, and there is also a good content warning at the start, so I could see this getting a Mythic rating.
