Ride with me over the iconic Remutaka Hill on State Highway 2, one of New Zealand’s most famous winding roads. From the summit views across the Remutaka Range to the solemn stop at the Featherston War Memorial, this ride combines epic scenery with New Zealand history.
The Featherston War Memorial was unveiled on Anzac Day 1927, and nearby Featherston was home to NZ’s largest military training camp during WWI. More than 60,000 troops marched the “Remutaka Crossing” from the camp to Wellington before heading overseas. In WWII, Featherston also housed New Zealand’s only prisoner of war camp, where tragedy struck in 1943.
The Remutaka Hill climb itself rises to 555m and offers tight curves, steep drops, and unforgettable views across the Wellington region and Wairarapa.
