➡️ I went into this track expecting AFI’s newer, more "polished" sound—but "Affliction" surprisingly retained that relentless energy and intricate layering I came to love hearing their earlier material. The riffs are massive, the bass work is absolutely cooking, and the arrangement is a masterclass in building tension. I discuss bassist Hunter Burgan’s frenetic-yet-perfectly placed bass lines, how they never detract from the songwriting (despite their speed and technicality), the unexpected chordal and melodic pivots that give the song its dynamic punch, and much more!
