What do you experience as a student in Marquette University’s Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (DE-MSN) program? Odie Deocariza and Jessica Payawal, two Marquette students, share what has made their experience special in conversation with one another.
“I got to see chemotherapy set up for the first time, I’ve never seen that set up before so it was really interesting,” Jessica says about a recent experience with Marquette’s clinical courses. Students can gain experience in a range of practice areas during this aspect of our curriculum, though no individual practice areas are guaranteed.
“Some of our students have gone to the [emergency department], some have gone with the ICU, and then some have even seen a c-section and babies being born,” she says.
Odie enjoys his coursework, highlighting what he gets from his studies. “I really like advanced [pharmacology],” he says. “I do like to know how to prescribe, knowing what medication's appropriate, why we’re choosing that med over the other med.”
He also appreciates the support he has received from fellow cohort members and professors alike. He says, “[My professors have] gotten me externships, they have gotten me other opportunities to see other hospitals. It really allows me to branch out into other areas and see what I like and what I don’t like.”
Marquette’s Direct Entry MSN program allows students to fast-track a pathway to nursing in five or eight semesters. Students complete a curriculum of nursing theory courses, on-site skills labs and clinical simulations, and clinical courses at top health care facilities, graduating ready to earn licensure and enter the nursing field.
