ACTON BURNELL CHURCH | A CHURCH Shaped by KINGS and PARLIAMENT

St Mary’s Church, Acton Burnell, stands just a short distance from Acton Burnell Castle and is closely linked to the powerful Burnell family.

Built in the 13th century, largely under the patronage of Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells and Chancellor to King Edward I, the church reflects the same period of wealth and influence that produced the nearby castle.

The church is particularly notable for its impressive octagonal tower, which echoes the architectural ambition of the castle, and for its well-preserved medieval features, including carved stonework and historic memorials.
