What is the fate of engineered nanoparticles in wastewater treatment plants and, above all, during the subsequent sewage sludge combustion? For the first time, an Eawag experimental sewage treatment plant was equipped with a small but fully functional pilot scale sludge incinerator, where the sewage sludge is combusted at around 800°C in a fluidised bed reactor. Now the first experiments are underway.
