Expert Upgrade at the Tea Barn: Recording and Analysing a Late Roman Pottery Assemblage - Gary Bennett & Edward Biddulph
Study Group for Roman Pottery 2025 Conference – Gloucester (UK) 6th-8th June 2025, @ The Folk of Gloucester & Museum of Gloucester
Sunday 8th June
This paper focuses on how a local group of part-time archaeological volunteers (the Tea-Barn group) climbed the learning curve of identifying, sorting, recording and analysing bulk pottery finds from a large Roman Villa in Otford, Kent, with training and ongoing support from a professional Roman Pottery specialist. We focus on the many barriers and practical challenges of identifying and classifying a wide variety of fabrics from ground zero upwards, struggles over which recording system and level of granularity to use, funding, equipment and workspace, roles and responsibilities and making the best use of our time-constrained expert archaeologist, Edward Biddulph, and part-time amateur group pottery lead, Gary Bennett, for quality assurance. We will discuss our learnings and whether our experience provides a model for other community-based
groups. We will also give an overview of our work-in-progress covering the range of forms and fabrics encountered, with chronological patterns.
