For this event, Paniz Musawi Natanzi (DUMESC Postdoctoral Fellow 2023/2024) invited Lahore-based artist Shah Abdullah Alamee to bring two poets, whom he usually engages with individually, into a conversation with one another. This collaborative project culminated in a screening of a calligraphy performance featuring poems by Molana (Rumi) and Faiz Ahmad Faiz. The performance was recorded in Lahore and shown at the von der Heyden Studio Theater of the Rubenstein Arts Center at Duke University on March 6, 2024. The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring Jamal J. Elias (University of Pennsylvania) and Qais Munhazim (Thomas Jefferson University, East Falls), moderated by Sumathi Ramaswamy (Duke University).
Taking the artist’s body, movement, writing, and melodic recitation of the verses from the poems as a point of departure, the event explores the possibilities of a transnational and transtemporal conversation between Molana and Faiz, toward liberatory world-making.
