The 1996 Olympic 800m final in Atlanta was one of the best championship races, the only thing missing was the world champion Wilson Kipketer whose Danish citizenship hadn't come through in time and didn't get a clearance from Kenya to run.
The old man Johnny Gray took it out fast as he always did and set the race up. The first four men were under 1.43.

2.Hezekiel Sepeng (RSA) 1:42.74
3.Fred Onyancha (KEN) 1:42.79
4.Norberto Téllez (CUB) 1:42.85
5. Nico Motchebon (GER) 1:43.91
6. David Kiptoo (KEN) 1:44.19
7. Johnny Gray (USA) 1:44.21
8. Benyounes Lahlou (MAR) 1:45.52
