I got an opportunity to perform Kathak in a Conference organised by the Arts Faculty of Mithibai College, Vile Parle (E), Mumbai.
The topic of the conference was 'Women and Ecology'.
Inspired by the concept of Ecofeminism, I performed Kathak on one of the very famous Ghazals of Mirza Ghalib- Aah Ko Chaahiye, according to the interpretation of my Gurujee Pt. Anupam Rai ji which is as follows:
Aah ko Chahiye, ik umr asar hone tak
Kaun jeeta hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak.
It takes a lifetime for man to realise and be affected by the sigh of a woman/mother earth. And by the time man realises, the woman would have left us/ nature would have been destroyed.
Aashiqui Sabr Talab aur Tamanna betaab
Dil ka kya rang karoon khoonn-e-jigar hone tak
A woman's love is full of burning desires and patience at the same time.
What colour should a woman paint her heart to be able to bear all this until death.
Humne maana ki tagafful na karenge lekin
Khaak ho jayenge hum tumko khabar hone tak
The woman/mother earth accepts that man will not be indifferent towards her,
But by the time he realises her value, she will be burnt to ashes.
Gham-e-hasti ka asad kisse ho juzmarg ilaaj,
Shamma har rang me Jalti hai seher hone tak
The woman has only one quick fix to her grief, which is to die
But she is like a candle which burns itself to give light to the others.
Smilarly, despite the negligence faced by nature, it still provides the required comfort for live to thrive on earth, some day.
