In this fourth episode of the international student series, we'll talk about how to finance your studies and about DUO student finance in the Netherlands.

Attending university comes with a price tag. Let's find out what studying actually costs and what the possibilities for funding are.

Tuition fees
Are you enrolling at a university in the Netherlands? Then you'll be charged tuition fees. There are two types of tuition fees: statutory and institutional. It depends on a lot of factors, which tuition fee applies to you. You can figure that out on the BUas website https://www.buas.nl/en/programmes/pay....

Additional costs
In addition, there are some additional study costs. There are some programmes that have some extra study-related costs, such as uniforms for the hotel programme or certain software for the games programme.

Cost of living in the Netherlands
Besides studying, you of course have to find a place to live, buy groceries and may want to go to the gym and do other things. I would also take into account the cost of, for example, housing, immigration, insurance, and visa fees.

Netherlands scholarships
In the Netherlands, higher education is subsidised for students from EEA countries, Surinam or Switzerland, which means that tuition fees can be kept relatively low, especially compared to the UK or the USA.

The type of scholarship that may be useful for you can be found on buas.nl/scholarships. Keep in mind that scholarships are only accessible to non-EU students.

Student loan in the Netherlands
For those who cannot apply for a scholarship, we have DUO. DUO is a government organisation that provides student finance to students who are studying in the Netherlands.

There are three requirements to apply for student finance:
You must be under thirty years of age. When you are over thirty, there are other possibilities.
You must do a full-time programme at an hbo, university, or mbo, and then you can apply for student finance
You need to have the Dutch nationality or a residence permit. However, it depends on the kind of residence permit you have. If you're from one of the EU countries, it's also possible to receive student finance when you're working more than 56 hours per month in the Netherlands. If you're not able to work for 56 hours, you can contact DUO and they’ll look at your personal situation.

DUO student finance consists of three different components.

The first component is the supplementary grant, the supplementary grant is based on the income of your parents. To calculate the supplementary grant, we always check the parents’income of two years back. And when we have calculated the supplementary grant, that's an amount you can get paid into your bank account every month. You don’t have to pay back the supplementary grant if you obtain your degree within ten years. In other words, it's a performance-related grant.

The second component is the regular loan and the tuition fee loan. Both are loans, so you always have to pay them back when you finish your studies. For the loan tuition fee, you don't have to have a job.

The third component is the student travel product (public transport card). With the travel product, you can choose to travel for free during weekdays or at the weekends, using all public transport in the Netherlands.

Additional information regarding student finance:
At the moment (July 2022), the interest rate is 0%. However, this may change any calendar month.
The maximum amount for the supplementary grant is €419 per month
The maximum for the regular loan is €519 per month, but you can apply for a lower amount if you don't want the full amount. And it's also possible to change it every month.
The tuition fee loan is €90 per month.
You can receive DUO student finance for a total of seven years. And for the first four of those seven years, you can receive the supplementary grant. For the first five of those seven years, you can use the student travel product. For the full seven years, you can apply for the regular loan and the loan tuition fee.
The income from your side job doesn’t influence the student grant.
