This is a Valiha. It is the national instrument of Madagascar.
The instrument is from the Strings family and is definitely a Folk instrument. It is also a close relative to the Zither. It is made of Bamboo, usually carved out by hand.
Last year, a friend from church went on a missions trip to Madagascar and brought this to me as a gift. Honestly, I thought it was a toy at first, so I politely thanked him and placed it on my shelf. It sat there for a year, and yesterday I picked it up, looked it up online, and discovered that it is an actual instrument.
