The RFT EKD 500 is a professional radio receiver made in the German Democratic Republic in the mid 1980s. It covers approximately from 14kHz up to 30 MHz. It is big, heavy (25 kg) and it is very well built.
Some of the functions of the receiver are selected by entering different key combinations on a keyboard. There are not many switches or knobs, and the existing ones control important functions such as the VFO, volume or CW pitch, among others.
I am still testing my EKD 500 and learning its functions, and I don’t think I am taking full advantage of all of its potential yet. But I have noticed it is extremely sensitive and selective, and what left me truly speechless is the quality of the CW filters. They are just out of this world. I brought my EKD 500 from the hamfest in Friedrichshafen this year (2022). It was not too expensive. There were at least four other EKD 500 for sale at the hamfest, and they seem to be still relatively abundant in Germany, so many years after the fall of the Berlin wall. The seller, a Hungarian fellow radio amateur, included in the package a preselector unit (which unfortunately doesn’t work) and a dedicated suitcase with all kinds of interesting spares and accessories, such as the original RFT headphones. I am a very happy camper with this “new” radio!
