This color educational film is about Red China and offers a look inside Communist China and Hong Kong during the Cold War period of the 1950s and 60s. It is from 1966 and this is part 1 of 2.

Opening titles: RED CHINA: YEAR OF THE GUN? (:11-:31). Chinese students play and march, they sing. The songs have to do with helping people or overcoming American Imperialism. People march in China. Mao Zedong aka Chairman Mao, the founding father of the People's Republic of China, which he ruled as the chairman of the Communist Party of China. Mao watches and claps as children run. Mao waves at the people. Balloons are released into the air. The US is building up its troop strength in Southeast Asia (Vietnam). An electric bus drives by (:32-3:46). Soldiers march as a crowd cheers them. Peking Government Complex. ABC News Reporter John Scali talks while standing on a prop map of China. Chinese workers walk up a hill. Scene from a Chinese French Film of a boat. Men pull rope up a hill. A city in China, people use bikes. A boat comes in to port. Men use muscle power over machine power by going round and round and turning. Mao Zedong aka Chairman Mao is cheered by the people, the people love him (3:47-6:42). A Russian movie about the Chinese Revolution shows soldiers in action, angry men, people cheering, explosions, a tank on the move, raiding a residence, happy soldiers, long live Mao! (10:39-16:38). 1949, the Birth of the People's Republic of China, Mao's China. A train on the rails. Poor villages passed by the train. The area looks poor and dilapidated. A train speeds by people at a train crossing. Children are being educated in school, a teacher teaches them. Lots of people in a giant swimming pool (16:39-18:56). Morris Wills speaks, he was an American caught by the Koreans in the Korean War, who defected to China for 11 years. People on bikes, people shopping for food in a market, fish for sale. City life. Shoes for sale. Sewing machine for sale, this is very expensive. A TV set for sale. Peking's North Lake Park. People row boats. Chinese ice skate. Some play board games. Pictures of younger children.
