On today’s podcast, Ashley Thompson and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Ashley tells listeners what they are going to hear.
00:54 First, John Russell and Ashley have a story that comes from a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau. The Census Bureau says the percentage of people in the United States who were born in another country has reached 14.3 percent. That number has not been so high since 1910. Most people coming into the country are from Latin America. The American population also is aging with an increasing percentage of senior citizens. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
09:35 Then, Jill Robbins presents this week’s Education Report which looks at teaching developments in Finland. After years of pushing electronic devices in classrooms, Finland has moved back to using printed books to help students maintain their focus on school work. They begin a new school year with the hope of returning to good results in the schools. Students report that reading from a book is easier than reading from a screen. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
13:55 After that, Ashley and Jill discuss why Finland is going back to physical books. The reasons include the distractions that devices bring and the blue light from screens that interferes with sleep.
Next Ashley gives a promotional message for Let’s Learn English with Anna followed by a lookahead to tomorrow’s Technology Report. It will be on AI-produced crime reports. Supporters say the technology will save time, but others are not sure it is a good idea.
18:05 Finally, Andrew Smith and Jill have another Lesson of the Day. Today, Andrew and Jill look at Lesson 20 of Let’s Learn English. They give close attention to the words “can” and “can’t.” They carefully review how Anna says these words and tell listeners about sound changes in fast speech. There are pronunciation aids and explanations. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a...
Then, Ashley and Mario sign off.
