It was a big day on the farm—Higgins, our young Angora goat, got his very first haircut. On October 6th, Higgins and his mama, Midge, both took a turn with the clippers and now look extra sleek and ready for the cooler days ahead.
Angora goats get sheared twice a year, usually in April and October, when their fleece—called mohair—grows to about 3–6 inches. Higgins wasn’t so sure about the buzzing sound at first, but with a little patience (and Mom right beside him), he soon realized it wasn’t so bad. When it was over, he looked half his usual size—and twice as cute!
Mohair ranks among the world’s most luxurious natural fibers. (Fun fact: mohair comes from Angora goats, while Angora fiber comes from Angora rabbits—which we also raise!) Known for its beautiful luster and soft, silky feel, mohair delights hand spinners, knitters, and the fashion industry alike. It takes dye brilliantly and shines with a gentle glow that no other fiber can quite match.
Angora goats truly are amazing animals. They’re docile, sweet, and produce fiber more efficiently than any other livestock. People have treasured them for thousands of years. Their story began in Ankara, Turkey (once called “Angora”), where families often kept their pure white goats indoors to protect them—much like beloved pets. Even Moses mentioned their fleece around 1500 BC!
So here’s to Higgins and his very first haircut—a rite of passage for one of the farm’s cutest residents. We can’t wait to see how his soft, shiny mohair spins up this season.
