August 1944, Normandy, France. The smell of burnt metal hung thick in the air outside the town of Caen. Six weeks had passed since D-Day, and the Allied advance had ground to a halt. Tank commanders sat in their metal boxes, staring at the same German positions they had faced yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that. The ground between the Allied lines and the German defenses was littered with the smoking remains of 400 British tanks. They looked like giant steel coffins baking under the summer sun.
