In this video I'm going to introduce Difference and Repetition, and give a brief overview of its overall thrust as a critique of "identities".
Before I start, I put forth this dense quote from the beginning of Ch.5- Asymmetrical Synthesis of the Sensible:
"Difference is not diversity, Diversity is given, but difference is that by which the given is given, that by which the given is given as diverse. Difference is not phenomenon but the noumenon closest to the phenomenon."
Then I will unpack the idea of "Difference in Itself", which is the title if Chapter 1.
In this chapter Deleuze will critique the implicit tendency of western philosophers, specifically Aristotle and Hegel, to make identities primary and difference secondary.
He brings in key ideas from Nietzche and gives a positive critique of Plato, in fleshing out the idea of difference in itself.
My hope is that by the end of the video, it will be a bit more clear how Deleuze is going to use the concept of difference- the affirming, creative force and generator of identities- throughout the rest of the book.
