Ever wondered about how to find some of the amazing waterfalls in Nova Scotia? Join me in this video as we explore Pockwock Waterfall in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia. Read below for more details about this site.
My waterfall rating: ****
Distance from Halifax, Nova Scotia: approx. 28km
Total travel time: approx. 30 mins.
Total hiking time: Approx 1 hour. (2 km)
Fitness level: Beginner to Intermediate hike to the waterfall.
The Pockwock waterfall is about 30 minutes outside of Halifax and is located on google maps. There are multiple ways to get to Pockwock falls from Halifax but all lead to Hammonds Plains Road. Once on Hammonds Plains road drive approx. 5 km and take a slight right onto Pockwock Road. Drive another 5.5 km until you see the road bank to the right. The trail head will be on your left.
The hike to the waterfall takes approx. 1 hour return and is approx. 2 km long. I would consider this a beginner to intermediate hike as there are some rocks and roots to navigate during different sections of the walk.
The short hike to Pockwock Falls starts down a dirt road. It follows the dirt road for approx. 1 km. This trail is within the Pockwock Wilderness Area. There is a watershed centering around Pockwock Lake which provides the drinking water supply for the city of Halifax.
There are lots of small brooks and streams that run along this dirt road which make for some interesting places to stop and enjoy.
Approximately halfway, as you follow the dirt road, you will come a point where you have the option to turn right onto another dirt road. Stay left. You will notice that the road starts to get rocky and more difficult to walk on. Be careful, it can be a bit tricky.
Continue down the dirt road until you see the bridge crossing over Pockwock River. You will want to turn right before the bridge to see the waterfall. Enter the woods here but note depending on the time of year it could be muddy and there are lots of roots and rocks to walk over.
As you walk along the Pockwock River you will come across a small set of falls. Keep going until you approach the larger waterfalls!
The largest waterfalls are approx. 15 – 20 feet high and lovely to visit. There is old growth forest and moss-covered huge granite rocks which were amazing. There is a particularly large boulder to the right of the falls that you can explore and climb.
