Gladesville, with riverside views, bush settings and a landmark bridge, is located on the northern bank of the Parramatta River. The Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum, completed in 1838, was the first purpose-built mental asylum in New South Wales.The first Gladesville Bridge opened in 1881. The present bridge was completed in 1964, at that time it was the longest single span concrete arch ever constructed.
