The Danzas Argentinas, a work from Ginastera's objective Nationalism period, presents 'gauchesco' folk elements in more extended forms. The Danza del Viejo Boyero or dance of the old cowherd ('old man drover') is the shortest of the three movements yet it concisely outlines a miniature five-part rondo. An archetypal example of 20th century black key/white key bitonality, it's dialectic nature--and tonality--finally rests on the key of e. The Danza de la Moza Donosa or dance of the graceful maiden ('unmarried girl') is a tragic, heartfelt da capo aria. It is a song with a dream-like, lilting middle section only to return in the third section to haunt it's own memory. The Danza del Gaucho Matrero or dance of the artful herdsman ('outlaw cowboy') takes the listener for a gallop over the pampas. This is the music of adventure. The movement's energy comes from its rhythmic vitality: changing meters and a pervasive 6/8-3/4 conflict--a compositional feature that can be neutralized if performed too quickly. The two heroic main themes interspersed with a driving ritornello suggest a sonata-rondo form, ending the work with a shimmering recall of the middle theme. [rights: CMRRA]
