Study Reveals Stromboli Tsunami Makes Evacuation Impossible

A 2025 scientific study published in Frontiers in Earth Science revealed alarming data: the Stromboli volcano can generate a tsunami that reaches inhabited areas in less than three minutes, making evacuation impossible. Scientists from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology conducted 150 simulations showing how 5 to 30 million cubic meters of volcanic material can collapse from Sciara del Fuoco, generating waves tens of meters high.

Arrival time: 165 to 190 seconds in the village of Stromboli, only 60 seconds in Ginostra. Subaerial movements generate waves three to five times larger than submarine waves. The 2002 event, which mobilized 30 million cubic meters, devastated the island without causing fatalities, luckily.
