Shaolin Temple of Olympic Weightlifting in Fuzhou

Most people have heard of the Shaolin Temple — a legendary place where monks dedicate their lives to kung fu. But few people outside of China know that there’s another “temple,” just as secretive, just as intense. Except here, the art isn’t martial arts. It’s Olympic weightlifting.

This is the story of the Majiang Weightlifting Base in Fuzhou, Fujian — one of the most exclusive and mysterious training centers in the world. Built in 2005, this multi-million dollar facility was designed purely for weightlifting and has produced Olympic champions like Shi Zhiyong, Deng Wei, Li Fabin, and Li Wenwen.

In this video, I take you inside the hidden world of Chinese weightlifting — from its humble beginnings on a tiny island training base with no electricity or plumbing, to the rise of Fujian as the powerhouse of modern weightlifting.
