Meenakshi Amman Temple, also known as Meenakshi-Sundareshwara Temple, is one of the oldest and most important temples in India. Located in the city of Madurai, the temple has a great mythological and historical significance. It is believed that Lord Shiva assumed the form of Sundareswarar and married Meenakshi at the site where the temple is currently located.
The temple has four main towering gateways (gopurams) that look identical to each other. Apart from the four lofty ‘gopurams,’ the temple also houses many other ‘gopurams’ that serve as gateways to a number of shrines. The temple has a total of 12 gopurams or towering gateways and two vimanas. Each one of them is a multi-storey structure and displays thousands of mythological stories and vibrantly painted stone statues depicting animals, gods, and demons.
It features four nine-story Raja gopurams, one seven-story gopuram, five five-story gopurams, and two three-story gopurams, two golden vinama (towers over the sanctum sanctorum), all of which are majestic in look. The southern gopuram is the tallest of them all with a height of 170 feet. These gopurams are repainted and repaired every 12 years.
