Come! Let us scatter the flowers and pour a new goblet of Wine
We shall tear the sky asunder and cast ourselves a new day
If Sorrow raises an army that sheds the blood of Lovers
I and the Cup-bearer shall unite and overthrow his foundation!
We pour the purple Wine into the bowl of rosewater
The sugar in the incense-box diffuses the perfumed breeze
Strum the harp well, while it is still in your hand! While the minstrels sing!
When we write the scattered hand’s ghazal or undertake a new project
The zephyr blows our soil and dust within view of His excellence
To search for opinion upon opinion from those good kings
One boasts from Reason, another prattles from Nonsense
Come! For we will leave these judgments for the Final Judge!
If the Eden of Paradise you want, then come with us to the Tavern!
There we shall dip you by the heel in the Fountain of Youth
In Shiraz, they do not teach the sweet song nor the kind word
So come, Hafez! For we shall make our way to another land!


This is a poem from the era of Hafez’s sad exile from Shiraz to Esfahan after he lost the favour of the new king in Shiraz. He’s basically like “fuck them all, i’m going to better places!”

It’s worth noting that this poem repeats the word “andaazim” a lot. I couldn’t really fit this into the english translation, so unfortunately it’s lost in translation. “Andaazim” means something like “we begin” or “we undertake” and it has the nuance of starting something new (whether it be a new goblet of wine, a new poem, or any new action you pour yourself into). It adds more emphasis into throwing yourself into something new and leaving the old.
