Description - Gemas is notable for being at the railway junction between the west and east coast Malaysian rail lines. For this reason, Gemas is busy for a town of its size. Before WW1, it was once named Ayer Terap. When the British came in the 1900s, they found gold while digging around the district and decided to call the place ‘Goldmas’, which was a combination of the word Gold in English and Malay (emas). Over time, it eventually evolved into ‘Gemas’. Today, Gemas is so much more than just a transit hub. The town actually sits on both Negeri Sembilan and Johor at the border. The Johor side of Gemas is known as Gemas Baharu.
