Dr. Martina Torrissen is a nutrition and biosciences researcher whose work explores how diet and microbial metabolism shape immune, metabolic, and gut health. With a background in molecular nutrition and lipid metabolism, her early research provided new insights into the biological functions of very-long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and how these unique lipids contribute to cellular structure and tissue integrity.
Building on this mechanistic foundation, her current research focuses on the gut-microbiome axis – particularly the role of tryptophan metabolism and microbial metabolites such as IPA in maintaining gut barrier integrity and systemic balance. She has led the scientific development of the Gut Health Test, the first-of-its-kind blood-based analysis designed to quantify microbial activity and reveal how diet and lifestyle influences gut and metabolic health.
She holds a PhD from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and her work has been published in leading scientific journals, including nominations for Paper of the year award in the British Journal of Nutrition.
