GP 30s broke the back of the F units, and GP7-9s that dominated American railroading throughout the 1950s and into the beginning of the 6os. New design, more horsepower, and great flexibility, gave the GP 30 the lead in what was know as second generation power. It wasn't long before General Electric and Alco started offering their own versions of the newer technology. But, it was EMD that was to dominate the diesel market for the next three decades. And it was the GP 30 no. 1 at the starting block.
