572. The 3 Secrets to Creating STUNNING Fluid Art Blooms

Hi guys! It's been a minute since I created a big bloom blowout this pretty! Three keys to success: a good hairdryer and taking your time to blow the paint carefully; a great color combination (anything over 5 colors gets lost) and layering the colors for contrast. I was in the mood for bright and happy summer colors and this painting delivered! Despite the rocky start with my camera equipment falling over (are you guys OK? LOL), this painting turned out absolutely stunning! I'm becoming more and more convinced that you don't need black as a cell activator color to get contrast and drama, and I'll be using more alternate colors in the future. THE RECIPE:

House Paint-base aka puddle for the substrate: PPG MultiPro in Eggshell from Home Depot, or Color To Go Extra White in Satin from any Sherwin Williams store. For this painting I used PPG MultiPro.

Pouring Medium aka PM Recipe: mix with all colors EXCEPT the cell activator color:

Sherwin Williams Infinity Base C In Semi-Gloss (Lowe's only) and Varathane Triple Thick Water-based Gloss Polyeurathane (Home Depot) mixed 2:1 ratio paint to varnish. Add small traces of water to thin if needed.

Use the colors and brands of your choice! These tutorials are meant to educate and inspire! Here's how to mix:

Pigments: For a 3 oz cup I add 1/2 teaspoon of pigment powder to the cup, then add enough gloss varnish (any brand; I use JoSonja gloss varnish) to cover the powder. Mix well until all pigment is thoroughly wet; then add the pouring medium; mix well. Recommend a Covid mask to mix.

For any brand fluid or high flow acrylics: I put 2 1/2 ounces of the pouring medium into a 3 ounce cup, then squirt in color until I reach my desired shade. Mix well.

For tube paint (medium or heavy body paint), I added an 1/2 ounce of paint (1/2 teaspoon) to a 3 ounce cup, then added 2 ounces of pouring medium. If still thick I add a squirt of Golden's High Flow Medium (thins and extends acrylic colors) OR water, and stir well.

Cell Activator/Color: Australian Floetrol + a 50/50 mix of Amsterdam's Permanent Caput Mortuum and a tiny bit of Lamp Black added to darken it up, 2 -1 ratio Australian Floetrol to paint.
