The 16th of June 1981 will forever remain an important date in rugby league history as it spelt the end of the traditional interstate battles between NSW and QLD. You know the ones where born and bred Queenslanders who just happened to be playing for Sydney clubs would swallow their pride and wear the blue jersey. In the last two seasons of the non-Origin state games we had the likes of Paul McCabe, Kerry Boustead, Graham Quinn, Rod Morris, Johnny Lang and John Ribot all wearing the filthy blue. JUST PLAIN WRONG!
The circus finally ended in June 1981 when just 6,268 people bothered to show up at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney to watch yet another NSW win. People had already enjoyed a taste of Origin in a couple one-off clashes and it was only a matter of time before the concept took over completely.
The match you are about to see also marked the end of the late great Arthur Beetson's stellar representative career. He played three matches for QLD ( 1 Origin, 2 non-Origins) to go with his 18 for NSW.
