Exploring Gakugei-daigaku. Is it really Tokyo's coolest neighborhood? | Almost Diplomatic

Welcome to another video where I try to overload you with information under the guise of a vlog. :) If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you already know how much I love uncovering the charm of Tokyo’s less touristy neighborhoods, especially those that are a bit further away from our ward or less frequented by tourists.

A few weeks ago, I finally made my way to Gakugei-daigaku, a quaint former college town I’ve been meaning to explore ever since we moved to Japan. Recently named the 15th coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out Magazine, it seemed like the perfect time to visit. Spoiler: it didn’t disappoint. Here’s what I discovered!

Note: This area is officially known as Takaban in Meguro Ward, but the train station’s name, which references a university that once stood here, has stuck over time. On my first visit (now one of many), I also learned that locals affectionately call it “Gakudai,” a charming shorthand that reflects the laid-back vibe of the neighborhood.
