The photographer adjusted her lens for what felt like the hundredth time as my sister Victoria orchestrated the "perfect engagement photos" at the Rosewood Estate. She'd rented the entire venue—a sprawling vineyard with manicured gardens and classical architecture—for what she called "a celebration worthy of our family's achievements."
Victoria stood in her designer gown beside her fiancé Richard, a corporate attorney whose family connections had made him a natural fit for her social aspirations. Around them, she'd carefully arranged what she termed "the successful branch of the family tree."
"Remember," Victoria announced to the gathering of thirty relatives, "these photos will be featured in the society pages. We need to project the right image of accomplished professionals."
The right image. Which apparently meant positioning successful family members in the front rows while relegating others to increasingly distant background positions.
"Marcus, you're front row center," Victoria directed my brother, the recently promoted bank manager who'd leveraged his MBA into a comfortable middle-management position. "Aunt Helen, you're beside him—your medical practice adds prestige."
Aunt Helen preened as she took her assigned spot. Her small-town family practice treating minor ailments and conducting routine checkups was being elevated to the status of medical expertise for photo purposes.
"Cousin James, front row left with the investment portfolio," Victoria continued.
James straightened his tie proudly. His "investment portfolio" consisted of managing inherited family money through conservative mutual funds, but Victoria had transformed him into a financial strategist for the occasion.
