The telescope was invented in the Netherlands in 1608 by Hans Lippershey, with similar devices appearing around the same time from Jacob Metius and Zacharias Janssen. The news of this refracting telescope spread across Europe, and in 1609, Galileo Galilei significantly improved the design and was the first to use it for astronomical observations, which led to groundbreaking discoveries about the moon, Jupiter, and the stars. Later advancements included Johannes Kepler's design for a more effective refracting telescope and the development of reflecting telescopes, which use mirrors instead of lenses.
