Chopin's only Baracarolle, Opus 60, was written 1845-6 and is one of his finest compositions. The Barcarolle, at the time, was supposed to be reminiscent of the kind of songs that Venetian gondoliers sang to
their patrons as they taxied through the city's canals. Those songs have long disappeared, but one can imagine the feeling of ease and flowing grace mixed into the opening of this great work.
