1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.
First John was likely written by the apostle John, from Ephesus, at some point around 85 to 95 A.D.. First, John was written to address the gnostic heresy growing in the early Christian community. The most likely candidates for the heresy are:
Cerenthianism: Christ became divine at baptism, which left Him upon death.
Docetism: Most Gnostics believed all physical existence is evil, therefore, Christ could not have been in the flesh. Docetism comes from the word “appearance” or “Phantom.”
John counteracts this heresy by making three points:
1. John emphasizes apostolic witness (v. 1).
2. “We proclaim concerning the Word (Logos) of life.”
3. Fellowship is dependent upon accepting historical apostolic testimony.
