The parable of the lost son, also known as the prodigal son, is found in Luke 15:11-32 in the Good News Translation (GNT). Here's the passage:
Jesus said, "There was once a man who had two sons.
The younger son said to him, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So the father divided the property between them.
A few days later, the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away and spent his money in reckless and immoral living.
When he had spent everything, a severe famine spread over that country, andhe was left without a thing.
So he went and joined a man in that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.
He was so hungry that he wanted to eat the bean pods the pigs were eating, and no one gave him anything.
At last he came to his senses and said, 'All my father's hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am, starving to death!
I will go back to my father and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against God and against you.
I am no longer good enough to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers."'
So he set off and went back to his father. But while he was still a long way from home, his father saw him and was filled with pity for him. He ran to his son, put his arms around him, and kissed him.
The son said, 'Father, I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer good enough to be called your son.'
But the father called to his servants, 'Hurry! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet.
Bring the fatted calf and kill it. We are going to have a feast and celebrate,
because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate.
"Meanwhile, the older son was out in the field. As he came near the house, he heard the music and dancing.
So he called to one of the servants and asked, 'What's going on?'
'Your brother has come back home,' the servant answered, 'and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.'
The older brother was so angry that he would not go into the house. His father came out and begged him,
but he answered, 'Listen, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me to celebrate with my friends?
But when this son of yours came back, after spending your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fatted calf for him!'
'My son,' the father answered, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
But we had to celebrate and be glad, because your brother was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and has been found.'"
