Fun Fact:
The Volvo 850 R was a new high performance version of the Volvo 850 series ( 1991-1997), it's a new car based on the Volvo 850 T5-R later rebranded it as the Volvo 850 R for the 1996 model year because Volvo has no successor to the 850 T5-R. The 850 R came either in a estate/station wagon or a sedan.
In 1994, Volvo wanted to participate in British Touring Car Championship or BTCC that year by joining forces with Tom Wilkinshaw Racing or TWR by using the Volvo 850 estate and turning it into a race car.
The 850 estate touring car performed well in the 1994 season with the best qualifying placing 3rd place and it's best race finishing 5th place , both touring cars were driven by Richard Rydell and Jan Lammers. Volvo in thr 1994 championship finished 8th place in the Manufacturer's Standing.
For the 1995 Touring Car Championship, TWR decided to ditched the 850 estate and using it's twin the sedan version due to the changes in the BTCC regulations and aerodynamic aidsin which the estate ended its chance to be competitive in the season. The sedan version of the 850 R qualifying 12 times and won 6 races that season, cars driven by Richard Rydell and Tim Harvey and putting Volvo from 8th place in 1994 to 3rd place in the Manufacturer's Standing for the 1995 season.
The Volvo 850 R Touring Car had compete across and in Australia in the mid to late 1990s . In Australia, the Volvo Dealer Racing Team use a 850 T5 and finished 25th place at the 12 hours James Hardie at Bathurst in 1994, both cars driven by Peter Brock and Tony Scott . It also participates in the 1995 Australian Touring Car Championship , the estate version was driven by Scott that same and the sedan version driven by Brock in 1996 and also in sedan version by Jim Richards in 1997. Both cars had entered the Bathurst 100 in 1997.
Back to roadcar version , the 850 R came in different colours which are:
Bright Red
Black Stone
Dark Grey Pearl
Dark Olive Pearl
Turquoise Pearl
Polar White
Cream Yellow
Unlike the standard 850 series , the 850 R interior of the car is different to the standard car here are the following:
bucket style heavily bolster front seats
Alanctra doors cards
2 tone leather steering wheel
Stainless steel "850" kick plates and "R" branded floor mats.
a SC -805/815 in dash CD player ( some others had it as an option)
For the 1996 model year , Volvo offered a heavy duty manual gearbox called the M59 with it feature a viscous compling limited slip differential.
Its powered with a 2,3 liter turbocharged 5 cylinder engine called the B52234T4, however 850 R sold in Italy use a 2 liter engine from the 850 Turbo due to the encumbrances of engine volumes. Anyway, the 2,3 liter 5 cylinder engine featuring a larger TDO4HL/6T turbo,a redesigned turbo manifold and intercooler, a unique ECU and a Bosch Motoronic 4,3 upgraded fuel sensor and a heavy clutch .
The engine producing between 177 to 184 kW and 300 to 350 Nm of torque paired with a 5 speed M59 manual gearbox or a 4 speed Alsin AW50-42LE automatic gearbox.
0 to 100 in between 6,7 to 7,5 seconds and the top speed is between 235 to 255 km/h or 146 to 158 mph.
Volvo estimated that 5000 to 7000 Volvo 850 R were made worldwide, it's a high performance limited edition of the 850 series.
