Install Skylords Reborn (Battleforge) on Linux using Steam Proton | Ubuntu | 2025

There was an update that stopped it from working. But user "Denolven" on the Skylord Forum made it work by updating the files with the "skylords-upd.sh" script instead. So after following this video:

8. Start the game from Steam. This should now open the Skylords updater and it should patch the game. When it finishes, you can click the play button. If the updater tries to patch but the window closes before the patcher finishes, stop the game via Steam and do the following three things:

1. Make sure that the unzipped game folder is not "read only".
2. From the game folder, open the terminal and use "bash skylords-upd.sh" manually. This is an updater script that has been provided thankfully.
3. Restart Steam and try step 8 again. The ingame patcher should patch the game now.

And thanks to ‪@randomGuy87393‬ for commenting or I never would've seen it again.

For some new reason I can take the launch option "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 %command%" out again after I launched the game once with the Launch option enabled. The render problems are gone, maybe it wrote something to the config, I don't know.



Add to "Launch Options" in Steam. This should fix the UI problem:
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 %command%
(excludes DirectX11 and DirectX10, so it will fall back to DirectX9)

alternatively:

-d3d9
(tells it directly to use DirectX9)

or if you get DirectX error try:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
(forces it to use WineD3D (OpenGL) instead of DXVK (Vulkan) , but worse performance likely)



I recently learned you can also check the sum like this:
Open terminal from folder which contains "BattleForge.7z" (probably ~/Downloads), then use:
echo "XXXXX BattleForge.7z" | sha256sum -c
(replace XXXXX with the current SHA-256 code from the website, just copy/paste)

for example (might not be newest code):
echo "22BF02A9E0D835249195E935AB0725A3BBDBA7DCFC006EAD526686A833C6CFAB BattleForge.7z" | sha256sum -c




Description:
Forgot to add: You need to make an account on Skylords Reborn first. Those will also be your Login credentials. Also you only see the .steam folder if you enable "show hidden files" in folder settings.
Recommend 1.5 speed. Sorry for low volume voice. Should just need Steam and the game file we download. I hope it works for you and have fun.
