Durango & Silverton Steam Train Ride

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been heralded as one of the greatest and most scenic train rides in the United States. Early on, the famous railroad was nicknamed, "America's Railroad," which is a statement that holds true to this day. In 2021 and 2022, the D&S earned the title for USA Today's Reader's Choice Best Train Ride and it is easy to see why. The former Denver & Rio Grande Western branchline travels 45.2 miles deep into the wondrous Colorado Rockies via the Animas Canyon, where passengers are greeted by a plethora of beautiful mountainous scenes.

The motive power in this video are K-28s 473 & 476. Both locomotives were built by The American Locomotive Company in 1923 for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. D&SNG 473 was retired in 1967, restored in 1981 an has been running since then. It underwent a coal to oil conversion in May 2021. D&SNG 476 was retired in 1967, restored in 1981, and taken out of service in 1999. It was rebuilt from 2016-2018 and converted to oil burning in June 2022.
