What makes SPACE MARINES SO COOL?

Warhammer 40 000 is a long running tabletop wargaming franchise that had its beginnings in the late 1980s. One of the reasons for its rise in popularity are the famous but also sometimes infamous Space Marines who by this point are basically the poster boys and bread and butter of this Games Workshop produced media empire. But despite being the ultimate fighting machines of the Grimdark 41st Millennium, the space marines seem to have some extremely well developed Sci-Fi lore which takes a lot of inspiration from other fictional sources but also from historical ones, such as the crusading Knights of medieval Europe and much more.
