In this video, I show how to replace the main gear and sprocket assembly in a Craftsman garage door opener. The nylon gear is a common failure point on both the 1/2 HP and 1/3 HP models, but luckily the repair is simple and affordable.
I salvaged the parts from a scrapped opener, but you can find complete gear and sprocket replacement kits on Amazon for under $20. This repair can save you the cost of replacing the whole opener, and with basic tools, most DIYers can do it themselves.
If your garage door opener motor runs but the chain doesn’t move, chances are the gear has stripped out—this video will walk you through the fix step by step.
