After the 9/11 attacks, we flew to Istanbul. Our grown children did not want us to go but we had been to Turkey twice before and felt safe. We then flew to Cappadocia, Turkey, highly recommended with Flintstones-like rock formations called fairy chimneys, painted underground churches and stayed in a cave hotel with jacuzzi, then back to Istanbul to board the beautiful Norwegian Dream for 12 nts. from Istanbul to Dubrovnik, Croatia, Venice, Rome and Pompeii, in Italy; to Cannes, France, and finally to Barcelona, Spain! We then rented a car and drove to Cuenca, Toledo, Avila, Segovia, LeGranja, and Madrid, Spain! It was a glorious trip with very few Americans traveling. We managed the aqua alta (high water) in Venice with rain boots and enjoyed the wonderful Spanish cuisine in the historic Paradors, especially the roast suckling pig with the crackling skin -- yum!
