Written in 1985 by Frank and Sean O’Meara and made popular by the late Jim McCann of the Dubliners, “Grace” tells the story of Grace Gifford’s marriage to Joseph Plunkett at Kilmainham Jail. Just hours before Plunkett was to be executed for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin which was the beginning of the struggle for independence in Ireland.
Grace never remarried. She was active in the movement for independence for the years after Plunkett’s execution. She died in 1955 and was given full military rights.
The Pub Runners performed “Grace” as part of a Musical Tour of Ireland Concert in March, 2025. at the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts Theatre in Manistee, MI.
