The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric-key encryption algorithm that was widely used for securing electronic data during the 1970s and 1980s. It was developed by IBM in the 1970s and later standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States in 1977.

DES operates on 64-bit blocks of data and uses a 56-bit key to encrypt and decrypt data. The key is used to generate a set of 16 round keys that are used to perform a series of substitutions and permutations on the data. The encryption process involves breaking the plaintext data into 64-bit blocks, and then applying a series of substitution and permutation operations to the data using the generated round keys. This results in the ciphertext, which can be transmitted over insecure channels without being easily readable by unauthorized parties.
