Immerse yourself in the captivating world of the Black-Barred Myleus (Myloplus schomburgkii), also known as the Disk Tetra or Black-Ear Pacu. Native to the middle and lower Amazon River basin, as well as the upper Orinoco River basin in Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela, this species is renowned for its distinctive black vertical bar adorning its silver, disk-shaped body.
In their natural habitat, Black-Barred Myleus thrive in densely vegetated tropical rivers with notable currents. When keeping them in an aquarium, it’s essential to replicate these conditions by providing ample swimming space, subdued lighting, and areas of refuge to boost their confidence. A tight-fitting lid is recommended, as these fish can move extremely quickly when startled and may launch themselves out of the tank.
Primarily herbivorous, they possess powerful dentition capable of inflicting serious bites. While they may consume most plant species, hardier varieties such as Java Fern or Anubias might occasionally thrive. Alternatively, artificial plants can be used to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the aquarium.
This daily montage series showcases the elegance and unique behaviors of the Black-Barred Myleus, offering aquarists and fish enthusiasts an intimate glimpse into the life of this remarkable species.
