New ONS data shows net migration drops sharply as more Brits leave the UK and fewer people arrive to work or study, with the net figure rising by 204,000 in the year to June 2025 but still far below the peaks of 2023 and 2024.
The fall is mainly caused by growing emigration, including a rising “brain drain” of young people and a “wealth exodus” of high earners looking for better conditions abroad.
Work and study-dependant visas fall by 70 per cent, and overall arrivals drop to 898,000, while departures reach 693,000. Ministers welcome the fall, but arguments continue over whether Labour or the previous Conservative government deserves credit.
At the same time, asylum pressures grow, with more than 36,000 people still housed in hotels and over 110,000 asylum claims made in the year to September 2025, mostly from small-boat crossings. Sir Keir Starmer calls the figures a step forward, but critics say the government has not done enough to control illegal migration.
